Rachel Clarke Event Director Rachel Clarke Events
Why did you join GMIC? I am a MPI member and I wanted to learn more about sustainability in our industry. GMIC seemed like the logical step but I hesitated as there wasn’t a chapter in Vegas. I then heard there was a chapter about to be formed, so I jumped at the opportunity to be involved.
How long have you been a member? Since the Las Vegas chapter inception in November 2010.
What is your sustainability philosophy? I believe all is equal in the universe. I am as powerful, important, and fragile as an animal, as a plant, as the desert sand. The human race is dominant and so we must be mindful of our true intentions and be aware of our impact in today’s actions and also to future generations.
How do you incorporate sustainability into your life and work? I try to go about my day in a thoughtful manner; not consuming more than I need to and to make good choices for my family and my clients. In my personal life I try to conserve water at home by putting large soda bottle in each toilet cistern to decrease the water that is flushed. My pet hate is front yard lawns that are just for show but use so much water to keep green. I rent, and unfortunately have a front lawn and it kills me financially and emotionally to have to put so much water on it!
What is your greatest satisfaction in being a member of GMIC? (or what sets GMIC apart from other organizations you are a member of?) Getting the Las Vegas chapter up and running and becoming official is a huge achievement. Now my focus is on creating interesting educational, networking events each month and building the chapter. It is a huge commitment but so rewarding when I meet new people in Vegas who are doing such amazing sustainable things. I am constantly learning.
What would you share with others just getting started incorporating sustainability or green practices into their works? Speaking as an Event Planner, I would suggest they seek out vendors that are, or working towards, sustainable practices. There are so many in Vegas who are heading in the right direction and we should support these vendors. This year I am planning to highlight some of these vendors on my website.
What do your attendees/employees notice the most from your sustainability efforts? Probably nothing! They are having so much fun in Vegas they probably don’t notice that they are staying at a property that has strong sustainable practices, traveling to a party in a bio diesel limousine; the minimal paper use and increase in technology; reusable signage boards; lack of water bottles, organic product in their lunch boxes…
What do you need from the industry to continue to advance in the realm of sustainability? I would like to see more hotels and vendors to join GMIC Las Vegas chapter as it is a great place to learn and share – either online or at an event.
