Patrik Dyrendahl Visit East Sweden GMIC Sweden Chapter President
Why did you join GMIC? I have been a member since we started our Swedish chapter in March 2011 and I am one of our ten founders. Since July I have the honor to be President for our Swedish chapter in formation. My engagement in GMIC is based on a true belief that education and involvement is the best way to change things to the better.
How long have you been a member? Since March 2011.
What is your sustainability philosophy? My philosophy regarding sustainability is simply- the more, the merrier! By that I mean if we can educate and increase the involvement in the meeting industry among stakeholders, suppliers and buyers around sustainability we have a much greater chance to reach our objectives.
What is your greatest satisfaction in being a member of GMIC? (or what sets GMIC apart from other organizations you are a member of?) The greatest satisfaction in being a member of GMIC is the opportunity to be able to both learn more about sustainability (personally) but also reach out to the meeting industry with the help of the platform that GMIC presents and educate all parties involved.
What would you share with others just getting started incorporating sustainability or green practices into their works? There are three main areas for incorporating sustainability as I see it:
Identify and understand stakeholders and develop processes that promote active participation in decision making.
Design and implement a flexible meetings and events process, which offers products and services that incorporate principles and practices of sustainability.
Engage in organizations who are active around SD, such as GMIC, in order to gain knowledge and network.
What do your attendees/employees notice the most from your sustainability efforts? That our destination (Linköping, Sweden) works with a holistic approach in terms of SD development for venues, transport and F&B. In every bid we can present a common baseline in terms of SD solutions which gives us a competitive edge.
What do you need from the industry to continue to advance in the realm of sustainability? I think that we should strive for more common certifications in order to clearify and make it easy for the clients to make good decisions. In this process GMIC can play a signficant role.
