Outstanding environmental and social initiatives will gain well deserved acclaim when the prestigious 2015 IMEX-GMIC Green Award Winners are announced during IMEX Frankfurt, 19-21 May 2015. Jointly run by the Green Meeting Industry Council (GMIC) and IMEX, these awards have been developed to recognise organisations within the meetings and incentive travel industry that are making an effort to minimise their environmental and social impacts.
There are four award categories:
Commitment to the Community Award
Green Meeting Award - Small (less than 200 delegates)
Green Meeting Award - Large (200 delegates or more)
Green Supplier Award
The Green Meeting Award is one of four categories in the IMEX-GMIC Green Awards. The Green Meeting Award category recognises environmental awareness among meeting organisers, highlighting the opportunities to stage business events in 'green-minded' venues, while also planning an agenda taking sustainability issues into consideration.
Last year’s winner was Global Initiatives, organisers of the Responsible Business Forum in Singapore. Under the banner of “Transformation, Growth and the Green Economy”, business leaders, NGOs and policy-makers from around the world gathered to accelerate the development of business solutions and policy frameworks across sectors including agriculture & forestry, consumer goods, financial services, building & urban infrastructure and energy.
The forum’s organisers believed that a revolutionary approach is required to create a more sustainable world and applied the same rational to the organisation of the event, pushing the boundaries of sustainable event management in Singapore including the following:
·a strong event management system guided by ISO20121
·all food was vegetarian and local - a first for Singapore
·90% of waste was diverted away from landfill
·100% of the carbon footprint from the event was offset
·it was the first event to use the new Singapore Sustainability Guidelines for the MICE industry
Applications for the Green Meeting Award are accepted in two award categories: the Large Meeting Award for meetings of 200+ and the Small to Medium Award for up to 200.
The Green Supplier Award recognises a meeting supplier, such as a hotel, convention centre or convention and visitor bureau, that has made real advancements in reducing environmental impact.
Sands China Ltd., a subsidiary of Las Vegas Sands Corp., scooped the award in 2014. A leading developer, owner and operator of multi-use integrated resorts and casinos in Macao, Sands implemented a formal environmental management system through the Sands ECO360° global sustainability programme which focuses on four pillars: Green Buildings; Environmentally Responsible Operations; Green Meetings; Stakeholder Engagement. The programme achieved particular success at The Venetian Macao, the largest single-structure hotel building in Asia. On a daily basis, several initiatives are implemented to save energy, water, recycling, raise awareness and share best practices with local stakeholders. This includes using energy-saving lamps, improving cooling and heating systems and building automation systems.
The Green Supplier Award recognises a meeting supplier that has made innovative efforts to reduce the environmental impact of their operations through planning, implementation and evaluation.
Winners of the 2015 IMEX-GMIC Green Awards will be announced at the IMEX Gala Dinner on 20 May 2015!
The IMEX/GMIC Commitment to the Community Award pays tribute to events, incentive programmes, conferences, associations or business projects that have demonstrated an innovative effort to benefit a charitable cause. It is judged against three primary criteria: suitability, creativity and sustainability
The award recognises environmental awareness amongst meeting organisers, highlighting the opportunities that now exist to stage business tourism events in 'green-minded' venues, whilst also planning an agenda in which sustainability issues have been taken fully into account.
There are two award categories, Large Meeting Award and Small to Medium Meeting Award.
The Green Exhibitor Award recognises environmental practices amongst IMEX in Frankfurt exhibitors and highlights the efforts they are taking towards exhibiting in a more sustainable manner both generally and specifically at IMEX.
The Green Supplier Award recognises a meeting supplier (e.g. hotel, convention centre, CVB etc.) that has made innovative efforts to reduce the environmental impact of their operations through planning, implementation and evaluation.
