While the Unitarian Universalist Association (and partner, MeetGreen) strives to improve their own events through planning decisions that embody their Seven Principles, they also aim to help host cities improve their ability to offer more sustainable events.
Central Florida has worked hard to become a leading sustainable destination and a new report recently commissioned by Green Destination Orlando (GDO) showcases Central Florida's commitment to being a sustainable tourism destination and how Orlando's Unique sustainability programs are shaping the future for travelers. GDO, the City of Orlando and Orange County have wide-scale sustainability initiatives in place to keep the region moving in the right direction.
The International AIDS Society (IAS), the leading global association of HIV professionals working to end the HIV pandemic, was presented with the prestigious Green Meetings Award (large meeting category). The award was made in recognition of the XVIII International Aids Conference held in Vienna, Austria, in July 2010, which had 18,000 participants. Organized to raise awareness and increase knowledge of developments in AIDS research and policy, the event was given highest praise by the judges for its delivery of green and CSR initiatives.
Oracle OpenWorld is aiming for 100 tons of waste diverted form landfill through purchasing, composting and recycling in 2009. Last year the event achieved 61% waste diversion, reducing waste by a total of 67 tons, and producing an estimated 2 lbs of trash per participant per day over the 5-day event. In addition to working with the meeting venue to donate and recycle, Oracle OpenWorld 2008 also reduced impacts by eliminating 11 shuttles per day, reducing the size of the onsite program by 60% and printing the publication on 100% post-consumer recycled content, using FSC certified paper. These printing decisions saved 965 trees!
Oracle OpenWorld just finished their 2010 Sustainability Report and showed significant improvements from the previous year's figures. Paper volume was slashed by 76%, 77% of menu ingredients were sourced within 100 miles of the meeting venue, reducing the average food miles by 2,482 miles! Building on this success Oracle is engaging their global marketing teams in improving sustainable event practices.
