Sustainable Event Standards Converge in Montreal
Driven by the global meetings industry, international governments and large scale event organizers, 2012 marks the release of three major sustainable event standards; APEX/ASTM, ISO 20121 and GRI EOSS. These standards provide the new global framework for defining, measuring and reporting the performance of a sustainable event.
In order to help meeting professionals test out new sustainability strategies and solve event challenges, the Green Meeting Industry Council expands its focus at its annual Sustainable Meetings Conference on the integrated application of these standards through innovation.
"There is growing evidence that event organizers who apply sustainable event solutions from an innovative mindset, and not merely a logistical one, are experiencing increased stakeholder satisfaction, comments GMIC Executive Director, Tamara Kennedy-Hill.
The Sustainable Meetings Conference was redesigned in 2011 as a learning laboratory using principles of game design to support maximum onsite engagement for senior level hospitality and meeting professionals.Several industry professionals share their perspectives on the value of attending the annual Sustainable Meeting Conference:
Microsoft: I've attended the GMIC Sustainable Meetings Conference for the past several years. Not only do I leave the conference inspired by the ideas and passion of the participants, but I've also developed great partnerships with many suppliers that I wouldn't have otherwise known about. Attending the conference continues to be an extremely worthwhile investment. –Gina Broel, Sr. Event Marketing Manager, Microsoft Corporation.
Oracle: What's unique about the GMIC conference is the ability to connect with so many like-minded people. These are people that really are committed and want to transform not only their own work, but an entire industry. Through shared experiences and learning and hearing from experts in the field the GMIC conference challenges us to think about how we plan and execute events differently to drive more value in a more responsible way. -Paul Salinger, Vice President, Marketing, Oracle
Canadian Medical Association: I've never gotten as much out of a conference as I have from attending the GMIC conference. It's a fabulous example of how a green meeting works and I walked away with ideas I could apply at my own conference. It saved me time, money, gave me the confidence to streamline some of our processes and inspired me to continue. Meeting other planners and suppliers in the "green community” is motivating and really educational for me. I'm thrilled to see the conference in Montreal.- Sandra Wood, Meetings Manager, Canadian Medical Association
Engineers Canada: I attended the GMIC conference not really knowing what to expect and wow did I come away with more information than I thought possible. It was great to meet people, planners and suppliers, from around the globe and discuss issues they were facing or had faced and how they had overcome them. I found the conference to be very educational on all aspects, cost effective, best practices, networking opportunities, questions to ask venues/facilities and took away lots of ideas for immediate implementation at my own meetings. I look forward to attending the conference in Montreal. –Dawn Graham, Meetings & Events Manager, Engineers Canada
U.S. Green Building Council: I want to thank GMIC for being both a convener and catalyst for this movement. Our collective mission and passion will invigorate a generation of green hospitality advocates who will correct our course and transition behaviors not tomorrow but today! Time is of essence and resources are challenged--it a privilege to be a part of the solution.
Montreal will be an epic meeting of voices collectively coming together to think Big as we work to transform the meetings and events community. We come together to be educated; but our stories, and the lessons learned, will inspire. The positive effects will resonate through cities and communities globally.
We are no longer a group but a movement; connect your experiences to all of ours and meet us in Montreal. Kimberly Lewis, Senior Vice President, Community Advancement, Conference & Events, U.S. Green Building Council
