June 17th -19th, 2015 ~ The Westin Peachtree Plaza - Atlanta
Green Meeting Industry Council Sustainable Tours
On Friday, June 19, from 8:30 – 11:30 am, attendees of the 2015 Sustainable Meetings Conference will have the opportunity to attend one of several Sustainable Atlanta Tours. Please read all about these fun, informative tour stops chosen for their distinct Atlanta flavor and importance in the city’s green scene.
One of the primary ways that we can learn about how others are working and thinking is to visit their facilities or workplaces and see hands on how they operate and talk to them about what they are doing and thinking about when it comes to sustainability. Atlanta has become a recognized destination for sustainable living and practice, and the network of suppliers and planners within this community are recognized as leaders in creating and sharing best practices when it comes to event sustainability.
These sessions are a combination of tours and content and are intended for participants to learn, share and gather intelligence that can be brought back to the larger group to help all of us continue to find answers and solutions that can drive change in the industry and answer the big idea question.
Each session will have a moderator/facilitator/group guide that will work with the facility and the event designers to shape the right content and discussions. Each session will have a set of inquiry questions that will help shape the conversation and the outcomes. All participants will be tasked with helping to gather information and report back to the larger group through photos, videos, notes, social media posts and any other means desired to add to the conversation.
|Atlanta Botanical Garden||The mission of the Atlanta Botanical Garden as a non-profit is to develop and maintain plant collections for display, education, research, conservation and enjoyment. With beautiful private event spaces and gardens, here are just a few of ABG's sustainability efforts: A cistern system gathering rain water to reduce use of city water; Trash is single stream recycled; Recycled waste plant materials through mulching; Cleaning products are environmentally friendly and biodegradable. In addition to the immaculate gardens, their innovative plant conservation program has made possible the use of native plants in recovery projects all over the southeast.|
|Atlanta Streetcar Adventure||
The focus of the Atlanta Sustainable Streetcar Tour is on the district around Atlanta’s new streetcar route, recently inaugurated. Attendees will board Atlanta’s newest form of transportation, introduced to help the city embark on a path toward greater mobility, cleaner and safer streets, upgraded infrastructure, and a better way of life. The cars operate along a loop that encompasses Auburn Avenue, Woodruff Park, and Peachtree Street, past some of Atlanta’s most historic sites, walkable blocks, and reusable and repurposed buildings. Streetcar neighborhoods are envisioned as an EcoDistrict, a place that is committed to accelerating neighborhood-scale sustainability. The tour will be highlighting green/ sustainability initiatives along the route, in part because of the contribution the streetcar makes to Atlanta’s sustainability program. The tour will include stops at Centennial Olympic Park, Sweet Auburn Market, Truly Living Well Center for Natural Urban Agriculture, and The Georgia Pacific Center. Each of these locations makes a unique contribution to Atlanta’s sustainable and green map.

|Museum of Design Atlanta (MODA)||
A LEED Gold facility, MODA advances the understanding and appreciation of design as the convergence of creativity and functionality through exhibitions, education, and programming for visitors of all ages. MODA was formerly known as the Atlanta International Museum of Art & Design.
