Inspire. Lead. Sustain

Atlanta is proud to be the first Affiliate Chapter of the Green Meeting Industry Council. We are a passionate group of meeting and event professionals committed to collaborating with the hospitality industry, advocating for a change in thinking, and educating others to further sustainable practices and reduce the environmental impact of meetings and events.  Our goal is to work with national leaders to build on our reputation as one of the greenest cities in America for meetings and events.

Our Mission

GMIC Atlanta seeks to promote sustainable practices within the Atlanta area meetings and hospitality industry in order to minimize the negative impact on the environment.  We will do this through education, networking, and the collaborative efforts of our stakeholders, balancing economic and environmental objectives.

Give Back Partner

GMIC Atlanta chooses an organization each year that we feel has a significant impact on the hospitality industry by doing good for others.  We will be partnering with Global Soap to support them financially and to provide opportunities for our members and industry friends to volunteer in their Norcross warehouse.  We look forward to helping promote their important mission.

Every so often there comes a small innovative idea that shocks the world of giants. Derreck Kayongo is fortunate to have been the author of one of those power small ideas that have changed the whole Hotel Industry and in the process both the health and environmental argument have met their march.

In 2011, Derreck Kayongo, after having worked in the International Development world for 15 years as a public policy expert, started the Global Soap Project, through which he invented the first ever known process of recycling partially used bars of soap. This came about after he realized that the hotel industrial complex threw away over 800 million bars of used soap and on top of that close to one billion bottles of shampoo, conditioner and lotion.

To date, the Global Soap Project makes over one million bars of soap annually which are then given to partner organizations like the Center for Disease Control (CDC), CARE International, Partners in Health, World Health Organization to mention but a few. Through these global partners, Global Soap Project has donated soap in thirty-two countries around the world.

The Global Soap Project earned an endorsement from the American Hotel and Lodging Association in 2013. Kayongo was among CNN's Top Ten Heroes of the Year in 2011 and he is currently at work on a book on how he found his calling in life as a refugee in America, scheduled to be released in 2015.

Kayongo is also a resident writer for the Huffington Post
