International World Water Day is held annually on 22 March as a means of focusing attention on the importance of freshwater and advocating for the sustainable management of freshwater resources.

An international day to celebrate freshwater was recommended at the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED). The United Nations General Assembly responded by designating 22 March 1993 as the first World Water Day. Find out what is happening in your community for World Water Day.

Leading up to the Sustainable Meetings Conference, which launches on Earth Day, April 22, 2012, GMIC has chosen to support ONE DROP by helping to raise awareness of water impact issues in the global meetings industry.

GMIC Chapter and Membership Challenge

Every week, starting March 12, 2012, GMIC will share facts on water impact usage in the global meetings and events industry. Each fact is linked with a list of simple acts that you can do to change something in your daily life that will help reduce your consumption of water will work towards and/or donate to ONE DROP.

From March through April 22nd, Earth Day and the opening night of the GMIC Sustainable Meetings Conference in Montreal, we will be tallying donations and pledges received on behalf of every GMIC Chapter towards this water awareness campaign. The chapter that donates the most funds and who has made the most commitments to change will be announced and receive prizes and special recognition at the opening reception of the 2012 Sustainable Meetings Conference.
