Oracle OpenWorld is aiming for 100 tons of waste diverted form landfill through purchasing, composting and recycling in 2009. Last year the event achieved 61% waste diversion, reducing waste by a total of 67 tons, and producing an estimated 2 lbs of trash per participant per day over the 5-day event. In addition to working with the meeting venue to donate and recycle, Oracle OpenWorld 2008 also reduced impacts by eliminating 11 shuttles per day, reducing the size of the onsite program by 60% and printing the publication on 100% post-consumer recycled content, using FSC certified paper. These printing decisions saved 965 trees!

Economic Significance of Meetings and Events in the U.S.
|
This library contains information and resources about the social responsibility aspects of meetings events, examples of CSR projects and organizations doing great things around this element of sustainability
This library holds the slides from the educational presentations given at the IMEX Frankfurt and IMEX America shows.
This file library contains files and websites with relevant information about Meeting and Event Standards.
Three separate and unique voluntary processes are now available to meeting planners, organizers and industry suppliers. BS 8901: the specification for a sustainable event management system. The APEX Green Meeting and Events Voluntary Standards: Published in collaboration with the USEPA, Green Meeting Industry Council and the Convention Industry Council. GRI: The Global Reporting initiative. A formal standard is based on the consensus of industry stakeholder opinion, meeting the requirements of an independent standards organization. BS8901 was developed by the British Standards Institution while the APEX green meeting standards were developed in association with the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM). Each country has their own standards body, most of which are members of the International Organization for Standardization, or ISO.

The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) is an international NGO and collaborating centre of the United Nations Environment Program that over the last 10 years has developed the world’s most widely used framework for sustainability reporting. The GRI G3 Sustainability Reporting Framework provides guidance and key performance indicators that create the conditions for the transparent and reliable reporting of sustainability information. Currently the GRI is creating a supplement for the events industry due for release in 2012. This project will result in a standardized framework for sectoral sustainability reporting, ensuring that sustainability reports by events organizers effectively cover the key issues for the sector and are comparable. This sector specific reporting guidance, integrated into the G3 Guidelines, is to be used in addition to rather than in place of the Guidelines. The guidelines are used today for leading events such as COP15, the Olympics and the Europe World Cup.
